BEIJING - Organizers of the 2008 Beijing Olympics said Thursday the torch relay will pass through Taiwan in a compromise over a highly symbolic event that the political rivals had bickered over.
At a ceremony in Beijing attended by senior members of China's ruling Communist Party and the International Olympic Committee (Related) , organizers said the torch would pass through Europe, the Americas, Africa and many Asian countries.
Toward the end of its international leg, the torch would go from Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City to Taipei, Taiwan's capital, according to a video shown at the ceremony. Among its dozens of stops in China would be Tibet.
Taiwan and China had held months of discussions about the route. They split 58 years ago amid civil war and have remained politically estranged ever since.
Beijing says that Taiwan is Chinese territory, while Taiwan maintains it is independent.
Both sides had hoped to use the torch relay to bolster their positions.
