KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Friends had warned us that the day would come when our baby would start getting into everything.
I thought I was prepared, even ahead of the game. My husband and I covered outlets and put away breakable picture frames and accessories. I even removed tall stacks of books.
But when my son started crawling, I realized I hadn't done quite enough to childproof. He was, as my friends had predicted, into everything.
In the living room, he climbed the end table as if it were a ladder. He gravitated to electrical cords. He pulled up on the sofas to cruise around. Suddenly the glass-top coffee table, even though it doesn't have sharp edges, seemed like a really bad idea.
In the dining room he grabbed and broke a tassel hanging from a drawer pull on the hutch. Tiny beads quickly disappeared into the carpet. ...
