 Mississippi schools could have mandated screening available in 2008-09 to test young students for learning disabilities such as dyslexia. First the state has to find the estimated $3 million in funding and develop the tools to do the testing required by a law that went into effect July 1.

Dr. Alfred McNair, of Ocean Springs, was selected as vice chairman.

 New Orleans' health director, Doctor Kevin Stephens, is lashing out at the state Department of Health and Hospitals for releasing conflicting data that question the accuracy of his unpublished findings that the city's death rate has spiked drastically since Hurricane Katrina. In a letter to D-H-H Secretary Fred Cerise, Stephens said he was "deeply disappointed" that the state agency "chose to release an incomplete mortality report that downplays the health care crisis in New Orleans."
