Lugging a bag full of heavy textbooks could soon be history for students in one Livingston County district. Pinckney is going high tech when it comes to classroom learning. In one mid-Michigan school district, more students will be putting down their old textbooks and using computers to enhance their learning.
Nancy Staub, Pinckney Assistant Superintendent: "The world in which students live in is all about technology."
The Pinckney community school board recently voted to start a new laptop program. A small group of 8th grade students will use computers instead of books in the classrooms.
Nancy Staub: "And they're also pre-high school, and we believe this tool is going to be most valuable at the high school level, and we want to take a look at this age group before we take it to the next level."
Pinckney's assistant superintendent says there are some parents who don't like the change, but overall, parents we spoke with liked the idea.
Carl Hein, parent: "I think the more technology we put into our classrooms, the more prepared I think our students will be for the future."
School leaders say the computers will also save the district money because it won't have to buy as many textbooks.
