 GAME TIME 7:10 CDT

Reyes back down to Memphis per Bernie on the radio. Blah blah blah. It's the same bulls**t that we've been hearing for the whole season. Whatever side of the Reyes debate you're on, this is without a doubt the proper way to mess up a pitching prospect. Let's make a list: 1) back and forth on the minor-major shuttle 2) attempt to change repetoire during transition 3) don't throw them on a regular 5 day pitching schedule. Hardcore and I hashed out the details  (Related)   in the morning thread...this is probably the 3rd or 4th time we've (good-naturedly) locked claws over it and I doubt many opinions were changed. Don't expect to see Reyes until September barring injuries to the rotation. Apparently Tony never wanted to bring Reyes up earlier in the season (that is verbatim from Bernie on the radio show). Reyes has gone from being the consensus top prospect in our system characterized as having front of the roation makeup to a pitcher struggling to hang on to a rotation spot. I can only imagine what he feels like right now.

In other news, Eck is to be evaluated by Paletta tonight and may not be back till post All Star Break (per Bernie on 1380). If that's the case, can we stop this bizarro world game of playing Miles at SS and Brendan Ryan at 2B -- it's laughable.

I've got up a little tidbit on Mark Buerhle   (Related)  over at Future Redbirds (my regular stomping grounds with erik). Given what has been said in the Chicago media, I think the package I've proposed would work but could definitely be outbid by several other teams depending on their level of interest in Buerhle.

I'll be MIA for tonights' game. But I gotta say I have an unpleasant feeling about Looper coming off the DL to lock horns with Webb, who has been exceptional outside Arizona's ballpark. Arizona is playing .544 baseball currently and the Cardinals...well the Cardinals aren't. I hate to be Debbie Downer but I hope Looper's got the stuff we saw in his early starts and not the later ones.

Drink a cold one for me tonight folks -- I'm off to 6 hours of class. Go Redbirds!

(And thanks to Larry for the privilege of contributing to a first class blog which of course consists of a first class community. I enjoyed this little blogging escapade -- hopefully, y'all did too.)

 The problem is crystal clear...

LaJocketty cannot/will not manage a team for any purpose other than winning immediately. Since winning immediately can't happen with the current talent level, all they can do is dig a deeper hole for the organization.

Therefore, I say...

LaRussa said before Reyes was called up

for his 3 start stint (which saw an 12 runs in 14.1 innings) that they didn't believe Anthony was ready to come back yet and that didn't want to call him up but had to because of Looper's injury.

Let's be honest, Anthony did his job.  He replaced Looper in the rotation.  Just not the Looper before he was facing shoulder pain. More like the Looper that gave up 16 runs in 16.1 innings.

If Eck stays on the DL, can we PLEASE start letting Ryan get at-bats?  At the very least, he can provide better defense than Miles/Kennedy.

Sorry to Todd, who's a fine man I'm sure, but desperate times call for desperate measures and I don't want to see the Cardinals trade Reyes for Victorino or some other assuredly mediocre bounty.

This is easily the dumbest thing LaDunc has ever done. Jocketty's award is still safe, because it takes a lot to equal Haren/Barton/Calero for Mulder, but this is a pretty stupid move.

 Good Luck fellas!

Good luck tonight and this series fellas.  I havent really been keeping up with the Cards this year, but AZ has been an interesting team.  Alot of the young hitters have struggled in thier first full years, and the offense has been carried by (if you can believe it) Hudson (scary) and Byrnes (even scarier).  Pitching really has been a surprize, esp the pen, who up until yesterday was rated 3rd best in the NL (SD, LA).

AZ is on pace for 92 wins - but really isnt that good of a team - pythag says about 500 - which seems closer to me.

Webb has not been the same pitcher he was last year, his mechanics and therefore location are all messed up.  If you see him falling off to the 3B side - he will start losing controll, and sink - if that is the case, he can be hit.

I dont know much about looper starting - Any good?

 OMG.....

My son and I were just talking about that at the dinner table....even though he lost again, Reyes really did pitch very well against the Mets....I'm sure Rick Peterson will have no problem getting him over the hump, he's worked wonders with some pitchers that didn't have much success with other teams....and Lastings is very much out of favor with the Mets.  I believe he is hurt right now, and I heard he had a "big Head" to which I say so what.....the team guys can get him back to earth.....I do think LaDunc couldn't have handled Reyes any worse, however.  And I will again commend Reyes for his behavior through this whole ordeal, because he hasn't whined, complained, or even hung his head down, and La Dunc has even talked in the press about every little and big thing he does wrong........the other pitchers don't get that kind of scrutiny in the press.  And especially over the weekend, when Duncan talked about how "hard" Wellemeyer worked to do what was asked. No one has ever accused Reyes of not working hard, and it almost seemed like Dunc implied it--totally uncalled for.  Whew, I'm so glad all of our pitching problems are solved!!

Or maybe they'd just quit trying to

make him into a sinkerball pitcher.  I mean it's all well and good, but every pitcher can't throw every pitch. They have also made sure that everything that they see as him doing wrong got into the paper.  I don't think they've done that with any of the other pitchers--and we watch the games, we've seen many, many mistakes.  Reyes is in the doghouse, and has been for some time.  I saw him for the first time on the news-I never even knew what he looked like-but I think he looked shell shocked.  They've finally killed him.  I hope they  trade him for his sake, LaDunc ain't never going to have him feel comfortable here.  And it came right after he pitched a game their way, ground ball after ground ball, then the rain came, and no chance to anything but tally it in the lost column.

 Possibly, probably......

but I just think they don't like that style of pitching, and they are forcing him to adapt in ways he finds difficult to do.  If they think he's not a good enough pitcher for the bigs, if they think he can't make it with the pitches he has, trade him.  Trade him to the Brewers or the Cubs so we can beat up on him.......They have ALWAYS looked at him in terms of what he CAN'T DO instead of what he CAN DO.  With the cost of pitching, no organization can afford to let one get away.  He may never develop into a solid major league pitcher, but I know for sure he won't the way they have handled him.....

i agree. in fact, if every start, he goes 6 innings, gives up 3 runs, and strikes out none, i would be happy.

what i meant, and expressed in a somewhat casual/flippant manner, is that a pitcher not striking anyone out is a recipe for failure in the long term. because whether a ball put in play is an out or not is pretty much luck.

I couldn't find numbers for team double plays turned, so these numbers are just the totals for each player (and therefore count double plays twice or three times). But we can probably assume that the average number of players involved in double plays is fairly static.

 180 DP, 66 GDP = 2.73

 467 DP, 129 GDP = 3.62

 531 DP, 127 GDP = 4.18

Everybody jumping on the team for sending Reyes down.  What were they supposed to do once Looper came back?  Tell Percival thanks for the two W's so long?  Waive Thompson or Wells and his contract? Wellemeyer?

Reyes has got plenty of talent and pitched well in his last outing, but he's 0-10 for cripes sake.  Is that all LaRussa/Duncan's fault?  In what baseball universe would he have been an effective pitcher with that 6+ era? He was orginally sent down to work on his approach - so be it.

God rest Bob Broeg, but if Bernie were a great sportswriter, he wouldn't be in Saint Louis. In all defference to Bernie, Reyes may never be an effective ML starting pitcher, and to be one he needs to find consistancy; that's what AAA is for. Lighten up already.

Interesting to see the lineup tomorrow vs. Johnson

Rolen's 5-10 the last 2 nights, so maybe he'll bat cleanup.  I pray that TLR leaves Duncan in there, but I realistically know that he'll probably sit him.

 Tony won't move Rolen

he's made it clear he like Rolen hitting in the 5 spot because Rolen is comfortable there.

I'd wager:

Gooch

Miles

Pujols

Encarnacion/Ludwick

Rolen

Ludwick/Encarnacion

Molina

Ryan

Wellemeyer

that is without looking at any stats.

And Duncan is a fastball hitter. I'd say there's a decent chance he'll start tomorrow against the aging fireballer.

great game gents. LOOP was better than I'd thought he would be coming off the DL. they actually got to Webb. which is something I didn't think they could do. good thing for us the DBacks infield is terrible.

 Props to Kennedy

The dude is barely over the Mendoza line, and has been almost universally awful, but I gotta give props to the guy for staying in the game after that grounder hopped up and (apparently) nearly separated one of his fingernails from his finger.

Dude was bleeding all over his pants as he wiped off the blood from his fingers in between pitches.  He not only finished the play and got the out at first, he finished the inning in the field with blood everywhere, and THEN he batted the next inning and stayed in to finish the game.

He may be struggling BIG TIME, but at least the guy's a gamer.  Gotta respect that.
