(MENAFN) A report issued by the Market Intelligence Center showed that Taiwanese companies have shipped an estimated 19.6 million laptop computers abroad in the second quarter this year, an increase of 40 percent from the same period last year, AP reported.
Intel Corp.'s May launch of a new Centrino platform helped drive consumer demand for high-end computers, the report said. Laptop exports also got a boost from foreign firms ordering in advance to avoid possible shortages of key components in the second half of this year, it added.
Taiwan is among the world's leading computer makers, manufacturing for many well known international brands. Taiwanese manufacturers often have their products assembled in mainland China, where labor costs less.
Taiwan exported 18.5 million laptops in the first quarter this year, up 40.9 percent from a year earlier, following the launch of the Windows Vista operating system in January, the report said. Falling prices, however, kept the value of the first-quarter shipment at about $10.24 billion, it said.
