Sarkozys Achievement (1 Letter)
To the Editor:
Re France Under New Leadership (editorial, May 8):
As a second-generation citizen, albeit in a different country, I believe that Nicolas Sarkozy is the most qualified to represent all the French.
The editorial mentions that Mr. Sarkozy is the son of a Hungarian immigrant and did not graduate from an elite university. In other words, Mr. Sarkozy himself is a nouveau franais. He grew up with a different French identity; therefore, he already recognizes equally legitimate ways of being French.
Given that he chose to run for the French presidency and succeeded, Mr. Sarkozy has emerged victorious from his self-identity struggle. He is an example to second-generation residents everywhere that assimilation and ancestral pride need not be in conflict.
